Fewer Early Pigs This Spring Than in 1950
Iowa farmers report fewer early spring pig farrowings between December and March, down nearly five percent from 1950. March pig totals fell, but pre March farrowings beat last year. Overall spring litters aren’t fewer, as most pigs arrive in April and May, yet August markets may be smaller. Bad weather reduced pigs saved per litter, possibly lowering early fall pig supply.
