Readable fragments paint a busy West Union scene with county officials reshuffled, school and bank movements, merchant changes and travel notes. Mentions Fayatte county school superintendency Merritt, Bank of Fayette officials, U I A league travels, and local incidents from road work to accidents and a grand jury case.
A fragmentary report recalls last week’s curfew rule changes for youths under sixteen, plus notes on the Burlington Cedar Rapids and Northern rail expansion toward Gwatonna, and the Twin Cities link via an expanded Milwaukee line. Other items describe an injury from a loaded gun, the death of Dr. D. B. Mattoon of Waukon at age 85, and local pearl and fishery markets tied to Lansing and McGregor, with price points around $100 to $850 and predictions of continued plant fishery growth.
The Fayette county convention at West Union last Saturday chose Charley Talmadge as county chairman after a split among factions led by Jim Trewin and Blythe, with a slate of township committeemen readied. The move shifts power toward anti Trewin forces, signaling a tense battle for future county and congressional conventions, and hints at loyalties toward Haugen in national alignment.
