Doctors deem her insane at times, with the death of her brother cited as a trigger. Her bondsman husband is away, and officials press for bond or release while she lashes at guards and visitors.
Reports from Pekin and Berlin detail April 23 and 34 engagements between German and French troops under Gen. Kettler and Chinese forces under Gen. Lin. The Chinese were driven from Shanxi province with four officers wounded, three soldiers killed, and thirty-two wounded. The passes into Shansi and three highways are now held by foreign troops.
New York April 30 Edward Rosewater editor of the Omaha Bee is quoted as saying William J Bryan will be a candidate for governor of Nebraska next year He notes Bryan has limited state influence but could win the nomination and then seek a Democratic legislature to help move him toward a U S Senate seat to replace Gov Dietrich whose term ends in 1965
Adolph Gartner of Bern claims a breakthrough in color photography after years of work. A fortunate accident led him to the discovery, with specimens on paper porcelain and glass in blue red brown and dark yellow displayed as proof of the method.

The Herald reports Italy views the United States as a dumping ground for climbers and paupers. Three Italian brigands, preyed upon by merchants seeking relief, landed in the U.S. with funds to travel. They are now in Kansas City. Police Commissioner Murphy has warned the Kansas City police.
Carrie Nation is reported to have her cases in Wichita County dropped for alleged saloon property destruction. She was released on own recognizance to attend her brother's funeral in Louisburg Kansas after a week in jail with three other women awaiting trial. It is widely believed the cases will be dropped.
At Harvard University a meeting of the Board of Overseers discussed awarding a Doctor of Laws to President McKinley. The sentiment expressed was unanimously in favor, with final action set for a June Overseers’ meeting preceding commencement.
A palatial train bearing President McKinley and a distinguished party left Washington for the Pacific coast. Officials from many departments joined the procession as guards and staterooms were reserved. Rousing welcomes greeted the president at Charlottesville Lynchburg and Roanoke as he spoke briefly from the rear platform.
