In a moonlit river passage Margaret Hilditch and Francis Ledsam drift toward a secluded backwater. A tense, intimate scene unfolds as he consoles her, she asks for distance, and he recalls their past and mutual attractions before parting with uncertainty.
Francis Ledsam defends Oliver Hilditch in a murder case and wins, only to learn from Hilditchs wife that he is a criminal. Ledsam dines with the couple, is drawn into a web of threats and mystery, and ultimately solves the murder with Sir Timothy Brast and Margaret present.
