Pioneer Farmers Use Mutual Fire Insurance To Avert Loss
Indiana, Ohio and Illinois saw populations surge in the 1820s to 1840s as rail and agricultural shifts expanded westward. Farmers formed mutual fire insurance companies to pool funds, offering cheaper protection and keeping farms productive. More than sixty percent of U.S. farmers belong to farm mutuals carrying over 25 billion dollars in coverage at about 22 cents per 100 dollars, with many operating on an assessment basis and half joined the National Association.
