William West of Quincy Illinois died Friday afternoon March 12 after five years of ill health. A Elkader born metal smith, he served in World War II and lived in Quincy thirty four years. Survived by two children a brother a sister seven grandchildren and an aunt, burial at Woodland Cemetery Quincy. He was a Lutheran and American Legion member.

Elkader Monona Dairy Herd Improvement Association led in February with 31.0 lb butterfat and 816 lb milk per cow from 584 cows in 26 herds in Clayton county. Garnaville DHIA reported 594 cows in 27 herds yielding 629 lbs milk and 26.6 lbs fat. Volga Valley Assn listed 17 herds, 367 cows, 680 lbs milk and 24.1 lbs fat.
Iowa farm milk production for February is estimated at 415 million pounds, up 2 percent from 406 million the previous February. The figure trails the 1943-52 February average of 445 million pounds.
A sleet and wind storm across the Midwest forced Bell Telephone Co to spend 1,072,000 dollars on repairs. Iowa bore the largest share, with Nebraska South Dakota Minnesota and other states also affected.
