The Blooming Prairie Times notes that some business men refuse to support town efforts and rely on others to attract people and spending. If everyone becomes a hitch-hiker, the town stalls and regresses.
West Union residents faced a government order to surrender gold and gold certificates. By Monday's close, Fayette County National Bank reported $7,000 received, including about $2,000 in coin and $300 in large bills, suggesting much was already surrendered while some held back.
