Road officials say line appeared safe despite prior traffic over the same spot. A track walker had crossed the site shortly before the disaster.

A north bound Louisville and Nashville express train was held up by masked men near Calera Alabama. Two boarded the engine and forced the engineer and fireman to uncouple the train. Four more waited as the messenger opened the safe with pistols. A number of money packages were taken. total amount unknown but said large. A posse pursues the robbers.

The act during the monarch’s visit to the city has caused a sensation amid the eastern crisis and is viewed as a bold diplomatic gesture.
Attorney General Taylor sues the Southern Pacific railway for penalties for failing to report to Kentucky state officers. The case concerns a heavy claim for franchise taxes totaling about 132 thousand dollars, with the state threatening action on the aggregate claims. William Dawson and his son made individual assignments at St Paul to A B Stickney and to Thomas L Blood respectively. The transfers cover the assignees’ estates. The Dawsons had large personal stakes in the Bank of Minnesota, which failed recently, making a creditors’ assignment anticipated.
The United States Court of Appeals sustains the Minnesota district court in favor of the American Steel Barge Company. Alfred and Leonidas Merritt sought recovery of collateral given to Charles W. Wetmore to secure notes totaling $432,578. Wetmore disposed of the collateral to the barge company, and the Merritts pursued legal action to recover it.

A Sioux City report states the Northwestern Iowa Grain Centers association filed two suits against the Chicago and Northwestern railroad overcharge claims on grain shipments to Chicago. Plaintiffs I. D. Babcock and E. Cathcart seek 35 858.03 and 25 053.98 dollars respectively.

In Washington March 14 the senate foreign relations committee agreed to report the Alaskan boundary treaty with Great Britain without amendment. Des Moines sues ex City Clerk Hooker and his bondsmen over $5,504 allegedly collected from contractors for fees.

British consul arranged rescue, insurgents reportedly looted Candino after Mahometans fled.
