Fourth and Fifth Grades report increased advancement with named students earning titles such as General Janice Torkelson Captain Douglas Chapman and First Lieutenants Howard Wolt Lavern Lyons Arthur Larson George Howard Burnell Larson Verna Grimm Joan Miller Roberta Mosby Barbara Boleyn James Butikofer Burnell Benson and Lane Ash. Sixth and Seventh Grades note new pupil Roman Jean Medberry in the 6th grade while Charles Becker is in the Postville hospital with an infected ankle. Seventh graders study angles and circles. sixth graders practice writing and reading, and boxing matches begin alongside basket ball sectionals to boost ticket sales and teach sportsmanship.
Elgin advanced to the sectional finals at Postville after a first bye and a 28 to ? win over Ossian. Wedo led scoring with 12 as Elgin beat Calmar 26 to 20 to reach the final, then lost 43 to 19 to McGregor in a nervy title game ending Elgin's 18 year finals wait.
The American literature class shares extemporaneous speaking trials led by Mrs. Schori. Students drew topics such as Careers for women and Famous Men for the boys, delivering varied, engaging speeches. One portrait features Owen Nickels, a senior born May 7, who loves basketball, ice cream, and blue, with taste for Betty Grable and Red Skelton.

Helena Groth nee Skarshaug was born November 28 1867 as the eldest of eight. She married Halston S Groth May 24 1888. he died 1932. Seven children were born, two died in infancy. After a stroke in August and another on February 3 she died February 24 at age 77. Funeral held Feb 28 at East Clermont Lutheran Church with Rev A Nesset officiating. Burial in adjoining cemetery.
The annual library meeting followed the Study Club meeting. Irene Kiple presided as vice president and minutes were approved. Elected for the coming year were Irene Kiple as president Myrtle Falk as vice president Marie Muehlethaler as secretary treasurer Gladys Schori as librarian Clare Kuster Rose Wolf Sue Bovis Leota Welch Frieda Crider Louise Zoschke to the board of directors. Book committee includes Ida Thoma Gladys Scher Augusta Schori Frieda Crider. The finance report was read and accepted.
The Elgin Study Club met Tuesday evening March 6 at Mrs. Louise Zoschke’s home with sixteen members and one guest, Mrs. Henry Meyers of Blairstown. The program covered Scandinavia, a book review of The Mountains Wait by Theodore Brock, presented by Myrtle Falb. A nominating committee of Leota Welch and Myrtle Falb was named, and the next meeting on March 20 at Mrs. Gladys Schori’s home will elect new officers.
Officials of the Farmers Cooperative Creamery at Slater are puzzled by a letter claiming five $20 bills were sent and noting the writer had neglected to pay for a shutter he took from the creamery long ago. H. L. Buehe, with the creamery 20 years, recalls no butter theft from that era.
