Community reception honors returning soldiers at opera house
A large crowd gathered Tuesday evening at the opera house to honor returning soldiers. Rev Cleworth spoke of his travels and experiences, with songs by the high school orchestra and a piano solo by Florence Kohler. Lieut Capper and Serat Hart Dummermuth led drills as fourteen soldiers displayed maneuvers, followed by refreshments and a Red Cross star list of local volunteers and drafted men.

Railroad Hearing Sets March 12 for Decorah Division
The state railroad commission fixes Wednesday March 12 as the hearing date on restoring train service north of the Decorah Division. Elgin residents are urged to attend to voice the town’s mail, transport, and express service handicaps and urge improvements. Bring neighbors, plan to travel to West Union for a larger turnout.

Meeting of Elgin Opera House Stockholders Scheduled

Elgin School Notes Highlight Visits and Examinations
Mrs. Mosby and Rev Cloworth visited Elgin schools this week while Agnes King and Theodore Reusser were absent due to illness and injury. Eighth grade county exams filled rooms. pupils from surrounding areas attended. A masked party at the opera house entertained staff and students, with Miss Berg and Miss Whetstone hosting teachers. Girls worked on crafts for teachers. Olga Gibertean created a gift scarf. Warren Harrington conducted Dubuque business.
