Freeman Seeks Parity as Iowa Farmers Hear Questions

STATE NEWS continues notes 3,000 delegates at district caucuses and a Spencer junior high talk by Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman. He answered about 60 questions from 400 farmers, defending farm policy and noting Iowa net farm income rose by 1,800 dollars from 1960. Freeman blamed misreports for policy misunderstandings and called for full parity of income for family farms.

Regents Seek 185 Million for Higher Education Across Iowa

The Iowa Board of Regents asked the legislature for 185 million dollars in appropriations, a 61 million rise or 49 percent over current funding. Increases were requested for the University of Iowa, Iowa State, and the State College by 57 percent, with 18 percent for the Braille and Sight Saving School and 17 percent for the School for the Deaf. Regent Ned Perrin cautioned about public reaction and suggested a 25 percent rise might be more realistic. The board also adopted a merit system to keep institutions from joining a statewide civil service. Polk County Judge Wade Clark ruled nonresidents are not eligible for agricultural land tax credits, a decision likely to be appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court.
