At the launch of Britain's Grat class battleship Albion at Blackwell a massive water surge submerged the yard. About fifty drowned and around two hundred people fell into the water as the staging collapsed. Police could not control the crowd while rescuers pulled dozens from the waves and recovered dozens more bodies. Relatives of survivors watched in distress as efforts continued.
United States Marshal Harr reports an instruction from Attorney General Griggs to detain all persons captured on Spanish prize ships until further notice. The policy surprises many, as most prisoners had been paroled and were to sail for Spain this week. In Marshalltown Iowa on June 24 night watchman Louis Leestutter of the Gentry dog and pony show died after using a flammable agent on his clothes near a torch. He became enveloped in flames and was burned to a crisp before help arrived.
