State Park Attendance Falls 35–40 Percent in May
May attendance at Iowa state parks fell 35 to 40 percent from last year with wet, cold weather and wartime constraints dampening outings. Parks report few fishermen, scarce concessionaires, and shrinking crowds at famed sites like Ledges near Boone, as officials hope for a rebound later in summer. A war stamp drive led by Edwin Moore Jr aims to sell at least one stamp at every sports event on July 4, targeting near $100,000 in sales. A scrap rubber drive seeks 80,000 tons by June 30 to impact gasoline rationing. Des Moines plans a white-out parade July 3 with store closures and a 15-minute noon pause for war stamps and bonds.
