Kathryn J. Strauch dies at Elgin Iowa where she served as local editor emeritus and underlines the newspaper role in Fayette County. The obituary notes her long service with the Elgin Echo and its post office arrival to second class mail status.
The June 18 1936 issue urges caution as thousands visit Iowa lakes and streams. The Conservation Commission warns about dangerous waters, advising swimming only in familiar areas or beaches with lifeguards, avoiding overloading boats, and warning others about risky waters to reduce drownings.
County records show per decade totals of accidents and injuries. In Fayette, 1934 reports 71 accidents with 9 pedestrian injuries and 7 children injured in 1935. 1935 sees 105 accidents with 11 injuries to children and 108 pedestrians injured in 1935. 1945 records indicate 84 fatalities, 109 injuries, and 54 involved motor vehicles.
A Tripoli Leader urges restraint and a generous view of others remarks that spiteful speech harms. He notes life is short and habit drives talk, advising control of the tongue even when kindness is hard.
Poem fragment aside, the piece notes George Van Buren of West Union reporting $217.17 in campaign expenses for lieutenant governor. It contrasts state and county race costs and remarks coal as a valuable geological product.
WPA workers discovered a potentially record size cephalopod fossil near McGregor. The oval fossil measures about ten feet long and narrows from head to tail, with scale lines visible. Geologists estimate its age at 480 to 590 million years and note a salt sea once covered parts of Iowa and surrounding states.
A week ago Sunday June 7 a large group gathered for a picnic dinner at the Ern Meyer farm near West Union. Attendees included Wim Chase and family Geo Nickels and family Adolph Hanson and family of Volga Jake Frieden and family Harry Reinert and family of West Union Mrs Mason and sons Orlin and Howard Emil Gulsvig and son Ira Olson and daughter Lavonda of St Olaf Martin Hanson and family of Elgin Archie Howard and daughter Shirley Ann Ida Frieden Adolph Ivers of Elkader Edwin and Elien Hanson.
The Gudrandsdalsaget group gathered for its national convention at Luther College in Decorah. The event, supported by Decorah Chamber of Commerce, marked the first time the meeting was held in town. Primary 164 near Arlington was closed for grading and graveling. Harold Hein of Postville received a three month sentence after plea in Allamakee County for illegal liquor possession at a Waterville dance pavilion. A car owned by Frank Havelick of Monona was involved.
The C G W shops are finishing flat cars fitted with tracks to carry two trucks for door to door freight. Loading platforms at major points, with operation expected by July 1, enabling rapid distribution to consignors. Twenty flats locally built, with 100 more from Pullman, and a motor car aids loading and unloading. A separate note reports a Dickinson Special dog food deal and a 100 gallon still found near Waukon Junction, destroyed with mash.
Judge Eichendorf names W. W. Davidson of Elkader to defend the Shine murder defendants in Clayton county district court. A special grand jury convened Tuesday to probe the killing of the 60 year old farmer, a case drawing wide public interest and media attention.
The eighteenth annual American School of Wild Life Protection will be held at McGregor from August 3 through August 15. It will include field trips illustrated lectures and a steam boat excursion with classes led by authorities on various topics and open to all at moderate cost. R Esslinger of Jesup elected superintendent of the West Union schools succeeding L A Steger who resigns to run an auto gale agency at Waterloo. Esslinger has served in Jesup ten years.
R P Strauch returned Friday from Davenport where he represented the local Masonic lodge at the 98rd annual communication of the Grand Lodge of Jens Masons. The three day session elected Dr T B Throckmorton of Des Moines as Grand Worshipful Master for the coming year, succeeding J T Amos of Traer. No bidders appeared for the 1937 convention and the matter was left to the incoming Grand Master.
Luther Co-educational move ends 76 years as men only. Convention vote 472 to 91 supports co education with both men and women to enroll next fall. Previous conventions failed to pass the proposal. A Kansas barber ad promotes hair cutting and ear washing service in humorous terms.
