Railroads Withdraw Rate Increases After White House Talks
President Taft, Attorney General Wickersham, and leaders of twenty four railroads reached a settlement on rate hikes. Tariffs already approved or filed become effective after June 1, and no new increases will be filed until a pending railroad bill passes. The government will drop the Missouri injunction suit once the bill is signed and provisions grant the ICC authority to suspend rates and investigate reasonableness.

The Senate approved the railroad bill by 50 to 12 after a lengthy session that featured Beveridge’s bid to place the statehood measure and Nelson’s public lands proposal as unfinished business. The measure, an amendment to the Hepburn law, originated in May 1906 and now moves to conference as Cummins led a four day opposition speech. Several insurgent Republicans and Democrats supported the bill as a step forward.
