The annual 4 H state convention will be at Iowa State College Ames June 25 28. Nine clubs have delegates and four clubs send leaders or assistant leaders.
Four hundred and twenty five corn hog growers in the county received checks totaling $60,285.00 at the county agent’s office, issued by the county association and Allotment Committee. Payments equal $2 per hog plus 165 cents per bushel, with the largest check $548.05. May plant corn for fodder now on non-contracted acres, but contracted acres remain unchanged and harvesting dates may be set by the administration.
Fayette 10th annual Farm Bureau picnic set for Thursday June 26 at Klock’s Sainnd in Fayette. Mrs Chas Sewell of Indiana chairs Home and Community Department of the AFBF as principal speaker. Old Fiddler’s contest begins 10 30 am. Boys and girls sports and a baseball game planned. Short talks by locals, band and other music planned. Everyone invited to attend.
The funeral of Dannie Parker was held last Friday at his Fayette home with many friends from across the county attending. Parker, known as Dy Danny to a wide territory, died Wednesday morning June 8 at age seventy six. He was born in the county and served as a teacher preacher and farmer. He was a friend to everyone.
Cheery Valley baseball team earned a 7 to 5 victory over Clermont Sunday at Schori Field. Clermont’s battery was Anderson and Tatro. Elgin pitchers Kohls, Dawson and Shaffer split time on the mound, with Wedo catching.
John Lecture sold a young cow and calf to St. Louis markets last week. The cow weighed 596 pounds at 1.25 per hundred yielded 7.43 and the calf 220 pounds at 2.00 yielded 4.40, totaling 11.83. After yardage, drayage, commission and insurance expenses, net was 7.58 leaving a loss from an $18 purchase with a 50 plan profit not strong.
The Sumner Gazette reports the First National Bank of Sumner was forced to close its Lawler branch by a Washington order amid regulatory interpretation disputes. Also noted are unrelated recipe and agricultural notes referencing spinach, vinegar, bacon, onions, and wheat export forecasts by the USDA.
Real estate transfers show J I Phillipe to Leota Welch for two parcels in Lutra and Clermont names Katherine Sheehan to Mrs Mary Sheehan Burke, Lena Hunsberger mortgage to Samuel Mosby Trustee for $800 plus ten marriage licenses issued in the period ending June 7. Also notes Ole House visit to West Union and a column about Iowa mortgage trends and a Roosevelt channel project costing $30 million.
4 H girls joined other Fayette clubs for their annual Rally Day held last Friday June 8. The previous meeting occurred June 4 at Albert Dummermuth home with lunch served. Next meeting planned for June 22 at Albert Dennler home.
Mrs Fauline De Sart Cedar Rapids visited Elgin for a week. Doris Miller hosted visitors from Suanigy and Clermont. Walter Pritchard and family spent time at a hotel sample room. Elmer Pinney sr received medical care after a sudden illness. Huron South Dakota guests stayed with John Johnson family. Janesville Wisconsin trip with T W Doan and Ziba Tripp family to their home. Jimmie Dawson returned from Oelwein hatchery assignment. Several visitors from Cissna Park and Fairbank joined Alfred Imhof and A M Weibel households. Oliver Torkelson family moved into town into former Yearous residence. Fred Berg and wife visited Eau Claire Wisconsin, planning to return. Eniel family outing included Verle and Josephine and Mrs F W Hughes to Gehring farm then Wadena Klingman home. E A Weibel Fairbank and wife spent weekend with A M Weibel east of town. Mrs Weibel remained for extended visit.
Harold Stoehr of Cedar Rapids visited Elgin on Sunday with several companions including Mrs Bolde Stoehr and Mrs Nella J Gappér. Mrs George Vaughn plans a Chicago visit with her husband working there. Hi A Reiners named mayor of West Union to fill vacancy after Elmer J Smith’s death, Fred Graver takes council seat.
