Madrid June 4. A cabinet council was held with the queen regent presiding. Retiring premier Senor Canovas del Castillo explained Cuba, the Philippines, and U S relations, leading to his resignation. The queen begged him to stay until crisis resolution. Canovas said the queen would telegraph Marshal Martinez de Campos, who would arrive tomorrow, to aid the crisis talks. A solution hinges on conferences among the queen regent, Gen Campos, and Liberal leader Senor Sagasta. In Havana the Diaro de la Marina denounces American correspondents over coverage of the Calhoun-Congosto inquiry into Dr. Ruizs death and accuses them of sensationalism and disclosure of sources.
Acting Secretary of War Meljejohn announced that Brig. Gen. Wade was assigned to the Department of Dakota at St. Paul while Brig. Gen. Graham moves to the Department of Texas at San Antonio. The Department of Columbia remains vacant awaiting Col. Merriam’s promotion to brigadier general next week.
Ex president Cleveland declines to serve as counsel for Venezuela before the arbitration tribunal. In his letter dated May he says his prominent role in securing the arbitration treaty precludes him from representing Venezuela. President Crespo has received the correspondence.
Senator Kyle obtained an order for releasing cattle held for redemption on Pine Ridge and similar reservations. Cattle and hogs are killed, eight or ten wagon bridges washed out, and the Great Northern track washed out in several places delaying trains. Reports also say Dublin aldermen will elect John Hedmond as lord author in Waterford City.
Federal agents report the Mitchell assault escalated to gunfire at 2 30 this morning. A mob opened fire injuring several, including Harry Bell who was killed, and others named H Hagin, Dennis Grateey, Dr Clin Thompson, Wesley Bowen, Ray Dickin son, Ray McIore, Gus Welser, and John Wrok. Urbina and Otto were among those detained with one suspect jailed for twenty years.
