The decision applies the rule of reason, labeling the conduct a grave Sherman anti trust act violation and ordering disintegration within six to eight months under court supervision to recreate a lawful condition. Justice White announced the opinion with a dissent by Justice Harlan on the rule of reason interpretation. The court directed dissolution efforts, possible injunctions, or a receiver if disintegration fails, and barred all acts expanding the trust’s inter state commerce powers during the period.
