The Ayrshire Lifeboat Rescue and the Life Car Legend

In the January 12 1860 blizzard off New Jersey the British ship Ayrshire sank near Sandy Hook. Immigrants numbered 201, saved by James Francis’s corrugated iron life car, hauled by rope and oxen through seven storms and 29 trips. The daring salvage saved nearly all aboard, except one who chose to wait for a woman’s turn. The life car’s fame grew as a pivotal coast rescue tool later highlighted by museum displays and enduring lifesaving lore.
