Memorial Day Observance At Elgin Opera House

A large crowd gathered at the Elgin opera house for Memorial Day programs honoring soldiers. Rev Lobr delivered a concise message on citizenship and preparation of youth. The day featured a decorated cemetery, a rain shower, and the Elgin Concert Band performing under shelter. Veterans rode to the cemetery by car while schoolchildren, led by the band, placed flowers on graves. A message on patriotism and national unity followed, urging preservation of the nation. Also noted are upcoming events: a West Union Teachers Patrona and School Officers meeting June 12-13, and rural school graduation on June 13, replacing the Fayette County Institute. Brite Snorp Coxnr and Gottleib Freiburghaus family visited, former township residents enjoying the trip. Eastern Stars held a brief business meeting delayed by the opera house program.
