Prohibition Nominates Levering and Johnson for President
The Prohibition National convention at Pittsburgh on May 30 nominated Joshua P. Levering of Maryland for President and Sinle Johnson of Algols for Vice President. The silver and woman suffrage factions clashed, with the broad gauge group winning control and replacing the platform to omit woman suffrage while endorsing prohibition and free silver. Levering, a 50-year-old Baltimore coffee merchant, was a longtime Prohibition leader and former Democrat. Johnson, a 49-year-old Indiana-born veteran colonel, had also been active in the movement since 1884.
