Two Iowa Train Wrecks Kill and Injure Dozens

Severe rain and a storm across northeastern Iowa caused two major railroad wrecks. Near Oelwein on the Great Western last night’s Chicago to St Paul train derailed at high speed, killing a sleeping car porter and badly injuring several. On the B C R and M main line near Waterloo the Cannon Ball rear northbound train derailed after a washout, killing eight and injuring about forty. Rescue of a Waterloo traveler, W J Schullian, was dramatic as he was pinned between seats with flesh ripped from his arm but survived.

Arm Amputation After Car Rescue in Illinois

Mr Odell discovered Schollian grievously injured in a wreck. Lacking a physician, rescuers used a common handsaw to amputate the mangled arm to save his life. Schollian, who had earlier worked as an Illinois Central engineer, bore the operation with no groans and walked to Markle’s farm afterward. His injuries are severe but his recovery is anticipated.

From Stone to Steel in Military Arms

The article compares medieval bombard weapons with modern long range rifles. It notes the 14th century bombard’s feebleness and bursting tendencies versus today’s forty-foot gun capable of firing 1100-pound projectiles fifteen miles, and parallels with the culverin and breech-loading rifles like Mauser and Krag-JJ. It ends noting some stone and bronze age weapons remain in use.

Armament trends and the path to peace in modern times

George Willis Bardwell notes in Frank Laslie's Popular Monthly that the sword remains common while the axe fades, gunpowder empowers common people and spurs reform, and civilization and arms have grown together. The piece ponders whether future wars will grow harsher or yield toward universal peace, then an unrelated notice advertises dentistry services of W. A. Prag at the Commercial Hotel on June 6 and 7.
