Melvin N Matthets died July 15 1982 at age 25 years 6 months 2 days after taking charge of his late father’s business about 1.5 years earlier. He leaves his mother and two sisters Mrs Chas Bareis Milwaukee Wis and Mrs Herbert Bryant Toronto Canada, with many relatives and friends. Funeral services were held July 18 at Highland Wis with Rev W F Schneck, then burial in Elgin beside his father. A Baptist quartet sang Abide With Me and prayers were led by Rev Ph Lauer. The family thanks friends for their support.
Joseph Schneider died suddenly at his home in West Bend on Friday evening July 8 at 9 30. He suffered from arterial sclerosis and hypertension. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon with large attendance. He was born October 23 1862 in Clayton county Iowa and married Anna Friden in 1887. Eight children survive along with four sisters, three brothers and seventeen grandchildren. He resided near West Bend since relocating from Rock Valley where he ran a meat market in 1911. A lengthy list of distant mourners attended the funeral.
At the July 6 meeting the Ossian town council lowered water charges. The 8,000 gallon minimum drops from $2.25 to $1.80 for 3,000 gallons, a 45 cent cut. The next 3,000 gallons rise from 50 cents to 85 cents per 1,000. Over 3,000 gallons stay at 25 cents per 1,000. The water fund balance is reported solid, and the clerk’s report shows only $1,000 debt remaining, likely to be paid this year.
A letter claims bee stings build immunity and prevent rheumatism, while suggesting a vaccination idea. Separately, Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Morris visited Waterloo from Marquette, leaving their daughter Jean Marie with grandparents during the trip.
Laurens Sun last week carried a quarter page ad by M. Hakes & Sons claiming the low mood will lift and predicting hog futures to hit 7.60 in Chicago by November 1. The bet involved 20 people at 5 dollars each with a $100 stake donated to the American Legion and Auxiliary if the predictor loses.
The McGregor Times reports on the Marquette Bridge giant structure with 1080 wires per cable, 60 workers for 20 months, 7000 feet project length and 4000 feet bridge length. Toll is 90 cents per car each way, 50 cents with 10 ride books. Traffic in May averaged 200 cars daily, peaking May 29 with 2000+ people in 550 cars.
A St. Clair meat truck left the road on a high grade between Arlington and Wadena, halted by trees at the bottom. No one injured. driver frightened. Calls for safer two mile stretch and road upgrades to move heavy traffic to a primary system. Also notes widening No. 20 curves between Waterloo and Jesup and a San Francisco wedding for Virginia Williams to Dr. Walter Kyes.
