Little Switzerland Migrants Named in Fayette County List
A compiled roster by John and Rudolph Lehman records 108 men born in Switzerland who immigrated to the United States and died in Elgin and vicinity since 1852. The document notes many more from Switzerland settled elsewhere, and the long list helps explain why Pleasant Valley is called Little Switzerland. The names include Lehman, Baumgartner, Bauder, Bauman, Braker, Duby, Frieden, Gerber, Lehman, Muehlenthaler, Pfarrer, Ritz, Schneider, Sutter, and many others who were prominent Elgin citizens.
