Victory Gardens Plan For Summer Plantings In Northern Iowa
Gardeners in northern Iowa should plant storage carrots and beets now and sow seeds a bit thicker for fall yields. Early July allows planting of busti strap beans like Stringless Green Pool and sweet corn. Many gardens are crowded, reducing yields. mature peas should be left on vines for winter use, and beans should also be left to mature before harvesting. Build a reserve of fresh vegetables to cut canned garden use and prepare for potential adverse weather next year, especially during wartime.
