Mint resumes silver dollar coinage after seven-year lapse
The Mint has restarted silver dollar production after seven years, replacing 279 million standard dollars taken from the Treasury during World War I to sell to Great Britain. Since late March about 20 million silver dollars, plus equivalent silver certificates, have been coined and issued, with Treasury certificates securing them retired. Officials expect the process to continue about five years to restore the prewar silver dollar reserve. Coinage halted in 1914 when metal supply ran out. authority resumed in 1918 via the Pittman Act to permit melted dollar sales to England.
