Severe 1842 48 Tar Winter Endured by Nettlerans
In Tar fall and winter of 1842-48 settlers faced snow from November to April. A notable trek carried Bailey Keeler Kibbee Paddelford Wandever with hogs to Winnebago Mission. They endured a knee deep snow journey eight days, then faced a later perilous return trip in a fierce storm with no food for twelve hours. The account notes their near reach to Volga timber before dark.

It notes railroads typically earn little in the dull season between westward spring traffic and autumn crop movements, implying no special losses occur to the carriers.
