Time of Cutting Will Affect Hay Quality

Hay quality depends on timing and handling from the field to the feed bank. Alfalfa should be cut in early bloom for maximum protein per acre, with bud stage yielding less tonnage and weakening stands. Leaf shatter and rain leaching reduce nutrients, and moisture below 50 to 65 percent increases losses. Rain during curing further lowers protein. cooler cows improve milk production.
