Stamp relief and stray animal tales from Burt and Decorah
Cletus E. Kramer of Burt obtained a new pair of white shoes with help from a Red Cross unit and a Kossuth county ration award after his ship was torpedoed by a Nazi submarine. A pet dog chased a near dead squirrel, which miraculously revived after a dramatic shake and an escape through a bank window grill. A fire at Holmberg & Erickson market in Decorah destroyed ham and bacon in the smoke room, though the meat under cure for farmers was lost.
