In La Crosse Wisconsin on January 27 the Han son desertion trial against the Terrier Frencher concluded with a guilty verdict after hours of deliberation. The court barred several letters from Minnesota as evidence. A motion for a new trial was filed. sentencing will occur in a few days.

George Kingsbury Jr a noted local newspaper man has been temporarily committed to an insane asylum after weeks of mental illness and failed treatment at Sacred Heart hospital. In Lemay Minnesota a smallpox case at Benids is reported with quarantine likely as health officials act. John Winjeewish of Winona Minnesota pleads guilty to second degree assault remains to serve sixty days.
Charles Hanks of Bowden was arrested by Deputy U S Marshal Davin on January 27 at Pargo North Dakota on the charge of selling intoxicants without a government license.
Governor Roosevelt stays two to three weeks longer in Colorado with Gerald Webb and Philip Stewart after a big expedition. They report six large mountains and three small ones killed, and say press reports were exaggerated. The governor described a close encounter with a lion to free his dogs before finishing the beast with his knife.
Miss Stellan Thomas of Burlington Iowa, twenty years old, died in Chicago at the Young Women's Christian Association building when the elevator fatally caught her head between the floor and car as she fainted during a vaccination procedure. A physician had been called to vaccinate inmates before the incident.
Ex Governor T. H. Houser A M. Holter and the Kleinschmelnit brothers of Helena Montana sell the Seven Devils copper property in Idaho to a syndicate led by Capt. Lewis A. Hail of Michigan and W. Whitcomb. Reported price is 31 million dollars. The syndicate plans a railroad into the district about 110 miles long to be finished by July 1.
Appleton Wisconsin January 29 Dr Rodermund the physician who argues smallpox is non contagious deliberately exposed himself to contagion in Appleton Saturday evening about seven eluded four officers aided by H W Rathbun principal of the Appleton School of Business drove forty miles to Waupace and boarded a train for Chicago Rathbun returned last night was arrested and placed in the pest house
Piet Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota passes away in Jamestown North Dakota on January 29. Gov Alfred Dickey died Saturday after illness. He had planned to open a public reading room at his own expense and was manager of the Alliance Mortgage Company of England. Dickey was the first lieutenant governor of the state, elected in October 1889.
Robert Anderson, an inmate of the state insane asylum, was captured in La Crosse after four days without food and a hundred mile trek. He slept in cold woods and his body was badly frozen.
In La Crosse Wis on January 23 witnesses in the county asylum probe testified that Supt McKown kept bodies of inmates who died for physicians as subjects for bioaection, linking him to the handling of deceased patients at the West Salem facility.
Faribault Minnesota January 29 burglars broke into the jewelry store of F C Sherwood taking a large amount of valuables and money left in the cash drawer. It is the fifth burglary of business houses in the city within a few weeks. J P Gempel's jewelry store was entered the night before but nothing valuable was taken. Police have no clue.
Ida Mutchle, a Racine resident, asserts she is a relative of Queen Victoria and entitled to a portion of Victoria's wealth. She alleges her grandmother was a cousin of Queen Elizabeth of Halland and that Elizabeth and Victoria were directly related. She cites a $1,000,000 New York property investment left by Elizabeth as the potential inheritance.
