Lawmaker proposes ban on packer feeding of livestock
Congressman Bert Bandstra introduces a bill amending the Packers and Stockyards Act to prohibit livestock feeding by packers with over 1 million dollars in annual gross sales and by retail chains with meat packing operations. The measure also bars officers or directors of large meat packing firms from packer feeding and bans direct contract purchases that could control livestock flow. State Rep. Al Meacham plans to reintroduce a formula to equalize state aid to school districts based on assessed valuation. An ISU economist predicts independent value feeders will hold most of the market despite expanded packer feeding, and 1965 Iowa corn yields are reported at 96.5 bushels per acre.
