Automatic frequency changer for superheterodynes described
F. Anderson explains an automatic frequency changer for superheterodynes that eliminates the double beat by fixing the long wave oscillator while mixing with parallel connected stages A and C. The scheme uses RF tuning and a first detector to yield a heterodyne output, with notes on practicality and tradeoffs for selectivity.

Power tubes enable higher volume without distortion
Power tubes are power handlers not producers. They require correct C battery voltage to avoid distortion and battery drain. CX-871 and CX-171 operate on B voltages of 100, 135, or 180, with 27 volts C at 135V B. For home use 135V B suffices, but proper wiring and fusing of C voltage are essential.
Radio Wave Distortion by Obstacles
Experiments by the Bureau of Standards show that buildings bridges trees and other objects between transmitter and receiver can deflect radio waves from a straight path. Each distortion may or may not affect the listener but should be avoided in using direction finders. The direction finder is now vital for guidance and requires constant vigilance.

Radio direction finder tests reveal distortion from nearby objects
A portable direction finder tested around objects shows induction and reradiation cause erroneous readings. Trees caused little error, while water towers and power lines increased distortion, especially at longer wavelengths. Detuning or opening circuits near receivers is advised to prevent wave absorption or reradiation.
