Federal government funds totaling 100 million dollars are being distributed in Iowa for corn and hog loans, averaging 468 dollars per farm, with the CWA town payroll at one million dollars weekly. Also notes a London report of a new TV transmission to Copenhagen and Boise Capper attending a hatcherymen district meeting in West Union.
Local clubs and residents urged to submit news promptly to the Echo. A case from Osage described a woman fending off a bandit with a bag of lemons, prompting his escape after a loud scream. Promoters seek city council permission for a Waterloo walkathon via Oelwein petition.
Definite approval by the state board of conservation and the fish and game commission for the back bone scenic preserve and artificial lake project was secured at Des Moines. State funds will aid development if the county can buy about one hundred acres, with about one hundred men expected to work for several months. Dorothy Thiele of Oelwein to become deputy in Arthur Johnson’s office Feb 1, succeeding Helen Seedorf who resigned.
In a light column from McIntyre and Chaff satire, Irvin Cobb quips that Noah’s ark leaked, a dog nose froze, a woman’s hand cooled it, and men stand with backs to fires. A Sumner resident bought a long-unsold article, sparking local bemusement.
County Attorney BM AC Qooney and Sheriff H J Nehring returned from New York after bringing back Mary Thompson the Gypsy woman accused of stealing $10,000 from farmer Glode near Oelwein. Two Gypsy men, Haggenzack N J, were captured and sent to Anamosa for five years. they are out now. Mary escaped New York before officers could reach her and is charged with two more recent robberies totaling over $1,000.
The dental office of R. F. Topliff at Postville was robbed of gold last week. Similar incidents touched Cresco with two dentists robbed and Monona reporting thefts as well. Bet ter watch our teeth.
