Elgin Canning Factory Plans Major Expansion
The Wigin Canning Company held its annual meeting in Elgin and approved doubling factory capacity. The Elgin Canning plant, started in 1882, now employs about 30 workers, packs 60 cans per minute, and ships to Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans and Duluth. The expansion will add a fireproof warehouse, duplicate machinery, and double the workforce. The move aims to boost local wealth as the plant is a key driver of Elgin’s economy and a major buyer of corn from farmers.
