Uproar as Gavel Falls upon Opening of Legislature
Iowa opening of the forty-ninth session sparks uproar over firings and salary cuts in the auditor's office. State Printer David K. Brown is dismissed and Senior Accountant Frank D. Johnson resigns, while Bedford Herald publisher L. M. Mike Shaw is named Brown's successor. Johnson had salary cuts from 2700 to 2400, with others affected. Brown plans to appeal through the legislature amid broad support from state officials and editors. The session opens amid turbulence, then aims to restore order as bills on 60 percent assessment loom and Gov. George A. Wilson's messages are circulated and revised for the inaugural address.
