Legislature Readies for Jan 17 Opening
The 1946 session faces bills from the association on state and county administration in education. A state administration bill would create a part time board to set policy for elementary and high schools, similar to higher education oversight. County administration would form a county board of education to streamline policy. Tax notes cite farmers as the largest state income tax group in 1946, with farmers paying 1,745,519.84 and 88,177 farmers taxed. Business executives paid 480,002.31, averaging 56.92 each. Iowa retail sales rose sharply in 1945 led by motor vehicles and household appliances. Farm sales also up, with 1944 farm product values above 1.1 billion dollars and electrification rising to 76 percent of farms.mileage
