Supreme Court nullifies New Deal AAA program
The U S Supreme Court ruled the New Deal agricultural Adjustment Act unconstitutional. Justices Roberts Hughes McReynolds Van Devanter Butler Sutherland opposed. Brandeis Cardozo and Stone dissented. The decision halts AAA payments and may allow processors to reclaim processing taxes. The ruling risks vast complications for farmers in states like Iowa and raises questions about future funding to settle 1935 AAA contracts. The administration plans to seek congressional funds to cover the obligations.
