Iowa House to convene for overseas voting in 1944 election
The 1943 Iowa legislature set to meet in a special session January 26 at the state house to pass laws enabling overseas voters to participate in the 1944 elections. Governor Bourke B. Hickenlooper urged an extraordinary session and a special election to fill eight vacancies. Officials estimate about 50,000 Iowans in service overseas, with roughly 11,000 to 12,000 under 21, leaving 48,000 to 49,000 eligible by absentee ballot. Confusion over 1944 vehicle registration penalties and January enforcement highlighted state parking and safety department rulings, with Attorney General opinions clarifying the approach.
