Five Chicago murderers hanged in Cook County Jail
Five Chicago killers were executed at Cook County Jail in a historic simultaneous firing of sentences. Thomas Jennings, a Black man, became the first to be convicted and hanged on fingerprint evidence. The others—Frank and Howard Shiblawski, Philip Sommerling, and Thomas Schultz—slain truck farmer Fred W. Guelzow Jr. showed bravado to visitors, while clergy stayed with them to the end. Executions occurred one by one within an hour. Governor Deneen rejected commutations despite appeals from West Side reformers.
