Much Debated Farm Measure Passed By Congress
The farm bill passed Congress with all Iowa Senators and congressmen voting yes. It directs the Commodity Credit Corporation to make corn loans when November crop estimates exceed domestic consumption and when farm corn prices fall below 75 percent of parity. Loans vary with supply, from about 45 to 65 cents per bushel, aiming to stabilize prices and hog markets. Marketing quotas apply once nationwide corn reaches about 2.735 billion bushels if two thirds of area farmers approve. The bill also lets the secretary represent farmers before the Interstate Commerce Commission on freight rates and creates four regional laboratories to develop new farm product uses and markets.
