Rome Feb 20 The Italian census shows 35,000,000 people, below the expected 41,000,000, with a growth rate higher than any other country. Improved sanitation attributed to surge. birth rate remains high. An estimated 5,000,000 Italians have emigrated to the United States and South America.
Carrie Nation returns to Topeka where she leads a crowd of 600 men and women armed with hatchets and axes to destroy a North Seventh street joint and a cold storage plant. She is arrested twice, released on bond, then jailed again before final release. Police guard property as crowds march in military order.
Reports from Pretoria describe Gen. Dewet crossing the Orange River with a large convoy of ammunition. Col. Plumer’s column pursued and defeated his command at Philipstown, forcing dispersal through rain and mud. Gal. Crabbe’s armored train captured fifty prisoners, twenty wagons, and most supplies, including 600 echelle, a Maxim gun, and 00,000 rounds. The Carolina commando broke through British lines and fled toward the west while the rest dispersed toward Piutstown.
Minnie Hultz, fifteen, daughter of James Hultz a wealthy county resident, was abducted at a country church nine miles east of Marton Indiana. A search found no trace. Hultz, valued at about 100000 dollars, suspects kidnapping for ransom rather than elopement.

Governor Van Sant had urged strict enforcement of laws and opposed boxing events in Minnesota, leading promoters to abandon the carnival.
Enoch Nelson was struck and killed between rails on the Great Northern tracks at the foot of Eleventh avenue southeast in Minneapolis. His bicycle was found nearby with the front wheel demolished, and a head bruise suggested he was hit by a train hours before the body was discovered.
West Superior Wis Feb 19 The jury in the Clabotta case deliberated twenty eight hours and found the defendant insane He admitted killing his wife but will not stand trial on that charge before the same jury It is understood only and man hung out for verdict of insanity
Fraudster Frad B. Wasser pleaded guilty to forgery in the third degree for altering the Milwaukee Road depot waybill and changing the destination of three car loads of wheat. He received $1,800 in cash and was sentenced to two and a half years in the state prison.
Hastings Minn Feb 10 G 9 Glark of Minneapolia was brought in from Cannon Fails upon a warrant alleging an indecent assault upon Mrs Gerhard Wiesen of Randolph Jan 20. He was arraigned and gave a bond of 800 dollars for his appearance Monday. It is reported the defendant is a representative of the anti saloon league.
Gutgevaon visited Lake City to establish two rural routes to start here. H Peterson and George Mashler, both locals, will supervise routes about twenty five miles long. Duties expected to begin in about three weeks.
Moorhead Minnesota February 18 The North elevator at Babin ten miles southeast of the city is burned. The structure contained several thousand bushels of grain and the logs on the building and contents will amount to about six thousand dollars.
Fodder thieves are active near Pine City Minnesota with several loads of fodder cars stolen recently. The next morning three loads of timothy hay were taken and traced into town.
Dan McDonald of Milton arrived in Grand Forks with a well developed case of smallpox after weeks of illness. Police rounded up contacts and disinfected clothing as officials worked through the night. The illness is mild but exposure was wide among locals and travelers.
A collision occurred between two Wisconsin Central freight trains at Cylon Wisconsin on February 20. Engineer Mills of the west bound train was seriously injured while the rest of the crew escaped by jumping. One car of stock was killed and engines badly damaged. No passenger trains were delayed. Air brakes on the east bound freight caused the crash. Conductors Rodd and Brown led the trains.
Clinton Iowa February 20 Postoffice Inspector Charles E Stewart and Postmaster W G Gardner trapped a mall thief after five months of steady robbing. The culprit George Le Mar age 17 a Windsor hotel bellboy was caught using decoy letters containing money.
In Marinette Wisconsin on February 20, the S. Hartwell Lumber Company of Chicago bought a large stake in the Bay de Roquet Company of Nehma Michigan. The 1901 cut totals 26,000,000 feet, with a consideration near $600,000, marking the season’s second largest deal.
Baraboo Wis Feb 20 Ringling Brothers report the death of Ned the baby elephant born last November at the winter quarters. Ned had been fed on malted milk at ten dollars a week. The Ringlings estimate the loss at fifty thousand dollars and plan to mount an exhibit next season.
Winona Minnesota February 20 Frank Brez ingil of this city was frozen to death on the farm of his son in Pine Creek Wisconsin about six miles from this city. The old man over seventy years old left the home of his son to go about the farm. After he had been gone some time his son began to worry. A search was instituted but nothing was seen until yesterday morning when he was found in a badly frozen condition the beds having lain on the ground for several hours.
Faribault Minnesota February 20 Albert Bahe and Marioni Mann were found guilty of larceny in the first degree after a hearing for burglarizing several local business houses. They were bound over to the next district court term with bonds set at 1000 dollars. Police seek a third suspect connected to the robberies.

Four year old daughter of M Squires at Lake Benton Minnesota was found by her mother enveloped in flames with difficulty the flames were extinguished and recovery is doubtful all readable facts indicate a serious accidental burn incident at a private residence near Lake Benton Minnesota on February 20.
