Two Distinguished Visitors Highlight Iowa News
Iowa welcomed two notable visitors last week, including Secretary of State George Marshall and Speaker Joseph W. Martin Jr. The larger story was the Iowa Supreme Court ruling that the agricultural land tax credit act is unconstitutional, a blow to the Farm Bureau and State Education Association. The act would have exempted agricultural land from school taxes above 15 mills if the land surpassed 10 acres, with $2 million annual credits for 1947 49 and $500 000 carried from 1945. The court, in a 5 3 decision, raised questions about funding and lawfulness. The Farm Bureau vows to continue fighting to restore savings. The State Board of Control considered sugar purchases for 14 institutions, delaying to lower prices from $9.20 to about $8.60 per 100 pounds, saving $2 000. A carload of flour cost $5.50, down $1.25 from January, and livestock bran price fell to $63 a ton from $90. Iowa deposits in 96 national and 558 state banks rose by $173 903 000 to reach $2 386 626 000 by year end 1947, per the Comptroller of the Currency and State Bank Superintendent. Under new national airport act Iowa will gain 83 new airports and improve 58 existing ones. A fourth candidate joined the Republican race for secretary of state, Rep. Charles R. Knickerbocker of Fairfax, Linn County, reducing hopes for an appointment on the board of control. Page 8 continuation.
