Elizabeth's War Time Reflections and Family Life
In wartime memory and domestic calm, Elizabeth blends grief and hope as she hosts Spratt and her children. Flashbacks reveal Arthur’s death, Spratt’s devotion, and her struggle to shield the family from painful recollections while savoring a secure home and lively evening chats. The chapter closes with her conflicted urge to intervene as her children read about democracy and war.
