State Spending Rise Prompts Tax-Free Funding Questions
The article notes large increases in appropriations including a 1.5 million rise for old age assistance, from 7 million to 8.5 million, plus a 400 thousand allotment for dependent children. It questions how Iowa will fund these without new taxes, while lawmakers see 50 thousand for the Industrial and Defense Commission as an investment in future industry, despite defense ties. It also reports population shifts affecting state legislative representation between Lee and Wapello counties, and mentions figures from Lee's John R. Irvin and Fort Madison’s Thomas W. Wellington, plus Wapello’s Joseph N. Wagner. The piece closes with Eagle Grove coverage of a homeboy watch award and the plan to finish legislative work within 100 days.
