State Board Reverses Decision on Witnesses

State Board adopts a voice vote resolution asking the Veterans Memorial Auditorium fair board to reconsider denying rental to Jehovah’s Witnesses. The measure drew objections from Rep. Rockwell who labeled the group discriminatory. Board vice president Lyle Higgins noted the reversal aimed to avoid perceived bias, with Witnesses to pay $2000 daily for use of the grandstand and Varied Industries Building. A separate debate in the Iowa House defeated a right to work repeal, with amendments on secret ballots and union shop failing along party lines.
