Soil fertility and high yields, Wisconsin study says
Emil Truog of the University of Wisconsin says high crop yields per acre, achieved with proper nutrients, mimic mass production. Tests show extra yields from heavy fertilization cost little per ton for alfalfa and per bushel for corn and oats, with soil fertility partly offset by legumes and nitrogen. High yields also aid erosion control and land for forests and permanent grass.

The note explains that damp litter in laying houses fosters colds and disease. It suggests draining floors through a pipe to eliminate dampness around water containers, placing watering pans on frames, and running water. It highlights feed loss from dead animals, including 40 pounds per December pallet and 140 pounds per newborn pig, and advises hot water in the separator bowl to prevent butter fat loss in skim milk. Moldy corn is less troubling for cattle than for horses and mules.
Mechanized Hog Farm Boosts Pig Production Efficiency
Dr. Waldo Semon of B F Goodrich touts a modern mechanized hog farm capable of handling 100 sows and producing 1,500 to 2,000 hogs annually. Conveyor belts chutes and rubber-fired tractors cut labor and fuel needs, lowering drag on plowed ground by up to half and speeding field work by a quarter.
