Rural radio access debated by FCC hearing panel

Farm groups led by the National Grange and National Farmers Union pressed the FCC to secure more farm programming and better timing. They argued 10 million rural listeners lack adequate daytime service and night access, while land grant university stations face cutoffs on clear channels. Industry lawyers defended allocations as evolving but offered little new evidence.

Issues Develop for Fall Campaign in Iowa

The 1847 session of the Town legislature is eleven months away but issues are crystallizing for the fall campaign. Key questions include administration of board of control institutions and liquor policy. A mass escape from the Eldora Iowa Training School has raised concerns over the board’s structure, with proposals to replace it with a part time board similar to the board of education. Liquor remains a campaign and legislative flashpoint, with liquor-by-the-drink proposed for Polk county and other counties by the Young Democrats, while the Anti-Saloon League vows to push anti liquor legislation. A local option measure passed in 1945 stalled in the house. Governor Blue’s appointment of Herbert Hauge to the board of control may signal a move toward eliminating the full-time board, though Hauge’s term runs to mid-1947 and needs senate confirmation. Republican incumbents appear set to run. Democrats have not yet fielded many, though A. J. Loveland and Mayor David Nevin are mentioned as potential contenders. (Continued to Page 6)
