Subscription biases and ad rates for various notices in the newspaper outline paying yearly and weekly charges. Small print lists 10 cent per line Want Ads with a 60 cent minimum, cash with order. Blind ads, cards of thanks and memorial notices priced per line with penalties for exceeding limits. Obituary poetry and resolutions may carry regular ad rates.
Elementary grades from Wadena Clermont and Elgin presented a multi locale program titled The World Around. The Dec 11 in Wadena Dec 10 Clermont and Dec 16 Elgin showcased scenes and songs from England France Germany Canada Mexico and the United States. Pupils wore native costumes and sang Silent Night and Joy to the World.
The Wadena Livestock Club met at Janet Erickson’s home on Monday evening. Members completed program books and postponed the roller skating party until January. Christmas gift exchange names were chosen. Elsin and Delonace Franks demonstrated nail types. Bradford Mattocks joined as a new member. The next meeting will be at Rita Jellings’ home. Mrs. Charles ONeill and two sisters returned December 13 from a California trip to attend a golden wedding anniversary for Thomas Enright in Oakland. Enroute they visited Reno Squaw Valley Olympic Arena Mammoth Valley and Lake Tahoe then Sacramento Oak Glendale Los Angeles San Diego and Tijuana Mexico before heading home to South Dakota.
The Sunnydale Club met Dec 18 at Mrs. Otto Blockhus home. Members sang Oh Little Town of Bethlehem and shared Christmas stories from Luke 2. A reading You Can Begin Again was given, devotionals, and a gift exchange followed. Boxes of cookies were prepared for shut ins and the next meeting will be in January with Mrs. Ole Reierson. Lunch was served by the hostess.
Elgin Local News notes Sunday afternoon coffee guests for the Conner Dummermuth family include Floyd and Essie Dummermuth and Carl Upton from Marshalltown, with Dawn and Steven in Cedar Rapids. Alfred Jacob Lena Baumgartner dine with Carl Hackmann. Leonard Heing and daughters join pre Christmas plans with Victor Heins in West Union. Charles Wenger hosts Mr and Mrs C J Anderson Cedar Rapids and family for Christmas dinner and supper.
A community Christmas period lists numerous weekend and weekday gatherings across Iowa. Families and friends from Cedar Rapids, Oelwein, Decorah, West Union, Dubuque, Fayette, and other towns hosted dinners, suppers, and overnight visits at homes of the Snyder, Reierson, Moore, Schupbach, and Lembke families among others, with service members returning from Fort Leonard Wood and holiday travel to various relatives. Several named individuals attend pre Christmas dinners, suppers, and hospital visits, reflecting a broad pattern of seasonal hospitality.
