Local notes on farm gains and sugar beet prospects
Mrs Bertha Mealey and Miss Leota Phillips attended events in Oelwein while a December 22 dance was noted. Weibel Brothers and Elias Benson became owners of a 20 acre Elgin area farm, trading the Nenenswander residence property. A nearby Mason City sugar refinery project, costing 1 250 000 dollars and capable of 1500 tons daily, signals sugar beet farming may grow with future plant demand. Farmers see beets as a potential major crop if labor and transport issues are resolved.
