Washington Aug 25 Steady work continues at Atlantic navy yards on vessels long out of commission to prepare for the joint army and navy maneuvers and the big rendezvous in the West Indies next January. At Portsmouth New Hampshire the Raleigh and Detroit are readied. Boston houses New York and Culgoa. New York yard Balti more. Norfolk second class battleship Texas. plus several torpedo craft set to join the Caribbean operation.
The Chicago & Northwestern railway released its annual report for the year ended May 31. Total earnings reached 46,644,121 dollars, up 3,545,534 from the prior year. Expenses were 41,343,241 dollars, net earnings 5,300,690 dollars. Bonds issued and assumed totaled 10,115,500 dollars, with 794,000 dollars retired, increasing bonded debt by 9,321,500 dollars.
Whitcomb Washington August 26 Judge Neterer overruled a new trial motion for H St John Dix and sentenced him to ten years in the state penitentiary for wrecking the Scandinavian American bank in this city. He fled to England and was arrested there about 10 o clock.
Major General MacArthur today publicized the maneuver rules for the army and navy exercises. The plan centers on a sudden assault on the eastern entrance of Long Island Sound to seize a naval base, with defense details organized for land forces. The simulated hostilities run from midnight August 31 to noon September 6, featuring a fleet of fifteen ships including five battleships.
Visible Grain Supply data for Aug 26 shows Wheat at 20,639,000 bushels down 5,318,000 from last year. Corn stands at 3,023,000 bushels a drop of 9,189,000. Oats at 2,072,000 bushels a decrease of 4,142,000.
A. G. Mitchell, a reputed Michigan millionaire and head of the Michigan Lumber Co. of Cadillac, leaped overboard from the Coptic about August 12, three days out from San Francisco. He was aboard with Dr. C. B. Miller and a nurse on a world health trip. Mitchell’s mind was said to be unhinged by illness. no trace of him was found after the steamer searched. He leaves a son and daughter. Dr. Miller returned to the city and termed the death an accident.

Boston August 25 The battleship Maine completed a trial run under service conditions reaching 18.9 knots on the fastest leg and a mean speed near 19.2 knots without tidal allowance. It surpasses the prior Illinois record of 17.84 knots. The new Maine displaces 12,600 tons versus the old 6,080.
Attorney General Knox returns from vacation at Atlantic City and will sail for Paris next Wednesday on the Queanie. He will travel via New York after a brief stay to address Panama canal matters that Mr. Russell, now in France, believes require his personal attention. Knox has no information on the exact issues.
The National Federation of Negroes was incorporated in Indianapolis on August 25. Its aims include protecting the colored race from mob violence, advancing the race, arresting and punishing leaders of colored people, securing equal rights across states and securing compensation for widows of colored men deprived of life by unlawful acts.
Captain C. C. Cooper of the transport Kearney died in Washington today after contracting typhoid fever. He had arrived last week in command of the Kearney with quartermaster supplies and was hospitalized shortly after arrival.
Mystic Conn Aug 25 The Universal Peace Union denounces army and navy maneuvers as increasing militarism and dependence on chemical weapons. It calls for abolishing drills and boys brigades in schools and favors fire drills life-saving practice and accident response groups. It also denounces lynchings and backs reforms to prevent strikes through fair wealth distribution and paid labor. Woman suffrage is urged.
Gates and partners John J. Mitchell J. L. Ellwood John Lambert and George L. Reis arrived in Chicago from Denver after a hard fought proxy battle over Colorado Fuel & Iron. Mitchell said a report from the proxy committee of the majority will be issued.
International news from Stockholm reports the steamer Antartic of the Nordenskjold expedition returned to the Falkland Islands July 4 with largely satisfactory results. Scientists measured a maximum depth of about 19 600 feet in the unknown ocean from the Falklands to South Georgia. Buenos Ayres reported Aug 18 that the Antartic was iced in and preparations were begun to sled overland. The voyage began Oct 16, 1901 from Gothenburg, led by Prof Otto Nordenskjold.
United States minister S. 8. Swensen visited the Albany and Chicago today in Copenhagen receiving a 15 gun salute from each ship. He toured the warships and praised officers and men. Danish naval leaders and Commodore Waldemar welcomed the Americans. the Danish training ship arrived and returned salutes. Chicago sailed to Havre. Swensen hosted dinner for American and Danish officers. Weyler to resign in Madrid amid court official tensions over journalist access to functions. In Agua Dulce, Panama, Morales Berti fights insurgents. no major engagements since July.
The Sentinel notes the United States corporation seeks a merger of malleable iron foundries nationwide and has approached Northwestern Malleable Iron of Milwaukee and Wisconsin Malleable Iron. President Sivyer said his firm had been approached but no option granted. It was unclear if the Wisconsin firm was willing to join.
In St Paul on August 25 the United States attorney general and the Northern Securities company counsel agreed that testimony in the merger suit shall start at the district attorney’s office in New York. Solicitor General Richards will lead the government case with St Paul’s C W Bunn M D Grover and George B Young joining the company’s New York counsel.
Wilkesbarre Pa August 21 President Mitchell arrived from Chicago saying no conference with coal railroads presidents is planned and miners remain firm. He sees potential for honorable arbitration but denies talks with Quay and Penrose. Wyoming mine output rises as washers operate though big mines stay idle and miners show little rush to return.
Tamaqua Pennsylvania August 26 Coroners jury appointed to fix responsibility for Patrick Sharps death at Nesquagonon rendered a verdict that he died by the malicious acts of either Harry McElmoyle or William Bonomus and advised they be held for trial The verdict is unsatisfactory to mine workers who claim McElmoyle did the shooting.
A cable car sped away on Ninth Street colliding with a stationary train. Gripman W B Taylor was killed instantly, at least 20 injured with six seriously. Debris and wreckage scattered. scene described as a mass of twisted iron and splinters.
A holiday tragedy at Filey near Scarborough as five children playing on the sands were drowned by the inflowing tide before their mothers on the shore could intervene. Rescuers, including the mothers, battled the surf with some narrowly avoiding drowning.
Terre Haute Indiana August 22 Clinton Pierce an iron puddler was killed in a fight with five policemen last evening one officer badly injured possibly fatally Pierce in a spree confronted a street car conductor then fled to a barber shop returned with two razors and rushed the officers as they arrived in a patrol wagon the clash ended in Pierce s death and a wounded officer.
James Romine of Mitchell Nebraska was captured in Worcester yesterday and held on 20000 bond on a Nebraska warrant accusing him of obtaining 20000 from the Mitchell bank by false pretenses. The fugitive case is active and Romine awaits extradition.
Russelville Ky Aug 24 Hugh Marshall accused of murdering Mrs Zoda Vick near town last Wednesday was found today hanging in a bore about a mile from the crime scene. He had apparently been hanging for a day or two. It is unclear if he hanged himself or was hanged by a mob, though most believe suicide.
Madison Aug 23 Attorney General Hicks issued an opinion affecting brewers. Manufacturers who ship beer from another state to Wisconsin for storage and sale must obtain local licenses, unless an agent in Wisconsin takes orders and ships to a consumer or agent, with delivery at the place of manufacture to a common carrier.

St Louis cattle and hogs show higher prices with hogs up 10 cents.
